Making a marriage last through the ups and downs of life requires more than a hot romance. The foundation of a marriage that is both mutually satisfying to each spouse and endures takes commitment. I'm talking about plain old stick-to-it-tiveness in keep one's vows to God and to your husband or wife. There is no other way marriage partners can experience deep intimacy with one another. The same holds true in discipleship.
The key to getting closer to Jesus is not more knowledge or emotional experiences, but rather commitment to Him. I encourage you to read and review Luke 14:25-35. Think about these questions: Why do you think Jesus gave the crowd following the warning He did? What was Jesus looking for rather than being popular in the eyes of the public? What’s dangerous about popularity? In romantic relationships, how is commitment different than infatuation? Think about your relationship with Jesus Christ. Are you infatuated with Him (looking for what you can get from Him)? Or are you committed to Him (looking for what you can give to Him)?

The challenge for the followers of Jesus is that they must move beyond having a crush on Him to being committed to Him.
