If you haven't seen this movie yet, go rent it now and watch it: Akeelah and the Bee. We viewed this on DVD New Year's Day and loved it. Absolutely loved it! Yeah, a few cynical reviewers have knocked it for being a feel-good movie, but it's a great one. Excellent acting, realistic storyline, emotional depth, and an uplifting message. Keke Palmer (Akeelah), Laurence Fishburne (Dr. Larabee), and Angela Bassett (Akeelah's mother) all give very fine performances. Here's a review from Christian Answers and one from Screenit.com. This is the DVD you should watch this weekend.
