Congratulations to Cal Ripken, Jr., on his election into Baseball's Hall of Fame yesterday, along with another great hero of the game, Tony Gwynn. During his stellar career, Ripken was honored in 1982 as American League Rookie of the Year, and as AL MVP in 1983 and 1991, and was selected for the AL All-Star team for 19 years straight.
But it was not his hitting power, batting average, fielding skills, or even local roots that endeared Cal to fans. He was elected to Cooperstown for his dependability as a player. The former Orioles' shortstop broke Lou Gehrig's record of 2130 consecutive games played by faithfully doing his job an incredible 2632 games in a row, earning him the nickname, "Iron Man." (Many players can't even play all 162 games during the regular season!) Thomas Boswell calls Ripken's election to the Hall one more opportunity for the former Oriole great to "bat clean-up" for Major League Baseball as it struggles with the scandal of illegal steroid use by some players. Cal honored the game by playing clean, working hard, and not cheating. Being blessed with talent and good health also helped him, so did having a great coach while growing up (his father).
Well done, Calvin Edwin Ripken, Jr. You've reminded us of how wonderful a game baseball really is, and you've demonstrated the power that comes from just being faithful each day. Thank you!
